Moving from one place to another can be laborious and stressful, especially when you have an abundance of large and heavy furnishings which you must carry downstairs and upstairs.
- Incline tall furnishings
Tall furniture such as dressers, bookcases and filing cabinets are best carried by two people. Tip the items backwards at an angle and carry the top while somebody else carries the bottom. This will centre the furnishing’s weight which will prevent it from swinging left and right and more importantly it will facilitate going up and down the stairs as the angle will match the slope.
- Curl chairs around corners
Large chairs cannot go through narrow or traditional doorways unless you flip them sideward (the chair must form an L-shape). Move the back-first through the door frame and then curl the seat through the doorway. By using this technique you can easily move large and heavy chairs without damaging neither the door frames nor furnishings. You can use the same maneuver to move small and mid-sized sofas through doorways. The only different is that you must flip the couches horizontally. Keep in mind that this job is best handled by at least two men. Alternatively if this chair moving methods sounds too time consuming and complicated for you, you can always hire professional removal technicians to carry out the task for you.
- Use shoulder dollies for heavy items
Shoulder dollies are specialised and affordable lifting tools which will permit you to carry heavy furnishings without hurting your back. More so, your hands will be free so that you can easily make adjustments in order to protect the moved items, surrounding walls and door frames form potential damages. The only downside of using shoulder dollies is that you won’t be able to easily navigate upstairs and downstairs as you won’t be able to incline the furniture that you are carrying.
- Use lifting straps
Lifting straps are also known as forearm forklifts and they can be used for the lifting and moving of large and heavy items which have flat surfaces (tables, beds, safes, pianos and etc.). Lifting straps can be found in two variations: fixed and adjustable. The former have a constant length and can be used only for specific items while the latter can be adjusted in dependence of the object that you are about to move and your own height and arm length. You can easily purchase forearm forklifts from any local removal company.
- Slide heavy objects
Carrying heavy items can hurt your back, knees and arms. However don’t make the common mistake of dragging such objects as you will most likely damage your floor and the underneath of the items. Instead put the furnishings on a cushioned moving blanket and slide it to its place.
- Use furniture blankets
Cover your large pieces of furniture with specialised blankets if you don’t have the time to dismantle them. This will protect their surfaces from unwanted:
- Dents
- Marks
- Scratches
- Cracks
- Other damages
Still if any of these damages occur, know that you can repair your furnishings.
